Earlier this week, Dame Helen Mirren, an advocate of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s XBX workout plan — a 12-minute circuit of basic exercises such as toe touches, sit-ups, push-ups and running on the spot — said simple, equipment-free routines could be especially effective for busy people.
The 79-year-old actress advocates a walk, or yoga.
Paul Farmer, chief executive of Age UK, said the charity’s first big campaign aimed at this age group was prompted by fears for the country’s future health. He said: ‘Evidence shows that being more physically active, in whatever way suits us, is hugely beneficial for our mental and physical health. Even small movements can make a big difference over time.’
